Susan's Rocky Boycott

November 1st, 2002
By Jim "Cosmo" Hetzer

On 8/11/2002 Scifi.com reported the following; Susan Sarandon, one of the original stars of the cult 1975 SF movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show, told SCI FI Wire that she wants nothing to do with a proposed remake—not even a cameo. "I'm boycotting the Rocky Horror Picture Show organization," she said in an interview. "They should have shared some of the wealth from Rocky Horror. For me, it's the principle of the thing. There are other people involved with that movie who need some money, And they should spread it out a little bit. It's been a golden egg for the longest time, and it's the least they could do."

After reading the book Rocky Horror: From Concept to Cult and having talked to individuals who were involved with the film I understand that some of the people involved need money. Who doesn't ? Well, maybe not someone who is reportedly earning $14 million dollars this year for the release of Goodbye Hello and Igby Goes Down. The Rocky Horror Picture Show may be a golden egg for "The Rocky Horror Organization", just because a movie developes a long run at the box office and becomes a merchandising mecca doesn't mean the "organization" should go back and compensate people who had small parts in the film or even people who may have sold their rights to the film.

In contrast, Step Mom, which premeired December of 1998, grossed $91 million dollars in the first 5 months at the cinemas. If the concern is with the video rental industry generating revenue for the "organization" Bull Durham, released June of 1998, grossed $21.9 million in rentals alone. Rocky Horror has generated $90 million dollars in cinema, and $49 million in video rental revenue over the last 25 years.

With Step Mom generating more money then Rocky Horror at the cinema, why isn't Susan Sarandon boycotting the "Step Mom organization"? Last I heard they weren't going back and redistributing profit from that movie. And why is Susan not standing up for Mark Jeffrey Miller who had a bit part as "Grounds Crew Man" in Bull Durham or any of the ballplayers in the movie who never acted in any other movies since. I think they could use some money too.
